LVM project “Climate Impact of Construction Products and Services” has been completed

A study ordered by JSC “Latvijas valsts meži” on the impact of construction products and construction services on the climate has been completed. Our team – Forest and Wood Products Research and Development Institute (MeKA), Riga Technical University, Latvian University of Biosciences and Technologies, Latvian State Institute of Forestry “Silava” and NOMAD architects with associated partners Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences and Riga Energy Agency – has created the basis for a national approach that allows objectively comparing the impact of building materials produced and used in Latvia on the climate throughout their life cycle – from resource acquisition to reuse.

This is an essential step to finally start measuring how the processes of different sectors of the economy affect the overall balance of national emissions. In the future, it will be possible to base decisions on construction and public procurement on climate data instead of assumptions, as well as promote smarter and climate-responsible use of the local resource – wood.

The prepared materials will be the basis for further discussions and strategy development. Latvia has the opportunity to use the guidelines and funding instruments provided by Europe to strengthen all sectors whose competitiveness is based on high-quality, innovative and climate-friendly construction.
